Lunar Eclipse!

Did you know there will be a lunar eclipse tonight? The earth will block the sun's rays from the moon.

I heard about it in math and science class, and also from my dad. So yeah, since it seems so important, I thought I'd make a post about it.

How would you feel?

How would you feel if a life-saving process, which you had researched and developed, was denied to you in a life or death situation? Speculation has it that this is exactly what happened to Charles Drew. He was an African American credited with the research and development of blood banks.
Charles Drew was born on June 3, 1904. At Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., he had become a promising athlete. Drew began college at Amherst, quickly becoming star quarterback, most valuable baseball player, and captain of the track team.
So it was no surprise when Drew was hired by Morgan State College. He became the school's football coach and athletic director. It was also here that Drew became a science instructor. With a growing passion for science, Drew entered medical school at McGill University in 1928. As an honor student, he joined a British professor in doing blood research. Fascinated, Drew continued his research on blood for two more years.
Drew continued his studies at Columbia University Medical School. While at Columbia, Drew learned all he could about collecting and storing blood. The goal was to save it until it was needed for transfusions. He soon discovered that blood preservation was possible if liquid red blood cells were separated from their near solid plasma and then frozen separately. Drew's blood bank system—the storing of blood—was a revolution for the medical field.
In 1940, just after the start of World War II, Drew earned his Doctor of Medical Science degree. Dr. Charles Drew was named director of the Red Cross Blood Bank and assistant director of the National Research Council. His process was used to supply blood plasma to the British during the war. These mobile blood banks were started to aid wounded soldiers. However, Drew soon returned to Howard University as Chair of Surgery because of requirements that the blood be separated by race. Drew understood that there was no racial difference in blood, and he felt that many could possibly perish waiting for blood from donors of the same race.
In 1950, Drew was involved in a serious car accident. News articles stated that he was not admitted to the nearest hospital because of his race. Articles suggested that Drew had lost too much blood in the transport to the nearest black hospital. Ironically, Dr. Charles Drew succumbed to blood loss because he was denied the very transfusion he had developed to save lives.

cookies and cupcakes

I made 24 cupcakes and I don't know how many cookies. I made the cupcakes by myself, and I let my sister help with cutting and frosting the cookies, after I made the dough.

spiders!

So yeah, I'm on another posting spree. Usually I don't have time to post and then when I do I have a bunch of stuff saved up.
So what do you think of when you think of spiderwebs?

So I googled spider webs and here are some cool pictures I found. They are so beautiful!!!

Painting the house

metaphors

Fish are floating bubbles
They float freely though life
with no worries or cares
They don't know that one day
they might fall out of the sky,
pop, & die.

Friend's are life's flowers

snow, teeth, normal stuff

Yesterday I got my tooth filled. It didn't take very long. It was quite painless. We couldn't go the the park or shopping because it was starting to snow. It's really icy outside now. My brother isn't in school today because of the snow!!! I hope this is worth it! I want to go sledding!

Walk in the park

Yesterday I had my dentist appointment, and it was pretty short, since they have digital photos now instead of having to wait for the pictures to develop. I have one cavity. I have to go back next Tuesday to get it filled. My sisters didn't have and but he said Mandy really needs braces.

After the dentist, we went to a park. I hadn't been there before. They have a really nice walking/biking trails. They have a pond, with geese and ducks, and lots of squirrels. We were walking with the whole family and noticed the squirrels were really friendly. We also noticed some peanut shells on the ground. So my dad and my sister and I went to the store (while mom and the kids went somewhere else). We got peanuts to feed the squirrels. We went back to the park, and walked a little more then 1/4 mile back to the bench where the squirrels were. Pretty soon they came out, there was more then 15. I took out some peanuts and put them on the ground. A squirrel came and took one and went back in the tree to eat it. Eventually they took them out of my hands, about 6 times. It was lots of fun and I want to go back next Tuesday. I'll be sure to bring my camera. :)

Haiku

In English class we learned haiku, a Japanese poetry.

-It has only 3 lines.

-5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second line, and 5 in the third.

-Presents images only from nature and everyday life.

-Often contains a word relating specifically to the season being described.

-Presents a moment of discovery or enlightment.

Here is an example:

Get out of my road

and allow me to plant these

bamboos, Mr. Toad

~Miura Chora

There is a deeper meaning to this poem. It isn't just some guy telling a toad to shoo. Lets see if we can figure it out. So what do you do when you want to build a building? You have to clear the land. Usually destroying trees and animals homes in the process. That's what's happening to this toad. The farmer is removing trees and destroying the toad's home.

So I had to write my own haiku, here it is:

Fish swimming around
Looking for a bite to eat
They hear feet, food falls
